Graduate students in the SBS are expected to earn a 3.0 or better in all courses attempted. Failure to maintain this average can lead to academic dismissal. It is the student's responsibility to monitor his/her academic progress. Formal guidelines for academic performance and consequent actions in graduate courses are as follows:
Graduate Warning
Subject to Dismissal
Dismissal
Incomplete
Incomplete (I) indicates failure to complete the course requirements. The "I" grade is given, at the instructor's discretion, only if the student has completed at least half of the course requirements successfully at the end of the semester and there is a reasonable expectation that all course requirements can be completed in one academic year.
The "I" grade in the Sawyer Business School converts automatically to an F after one calendar year unless the instructor extends the Incomplete designation.
The Sawyer Business School requires an Incomplete form to be filled out by the student and the course instructor. Upon completion, the form is returned to the Registrar's Office
Retaking a Course
A student may retake only one graduate course in his/her graduate program where an F grade has been received. The new grade will be included in his/her GPA. The original F will remain on the transcript but will not be included in the GPA. If a second F is received, the grade will remain on the transcript and be included in the GPA.
Students can appeal to the SBS Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and the Graduate Academic Standing Committee for readmission.
"W"
"W" signifies withdrawal from a course and is assigned administratively if a student voluntarily drops the course or withdraws from the University between the 10th week of the semester or if the student drops the course or officially withdraws from the University for valid and serious extenuating circmstances after the 10th week of the course. The legitimacy of the serious extenuating circmstance will be determined by the Student Affairs Office. Any reason for cause must be documented, certified and submitted with the completed petition.
