Ford Hall Forum Presents "Massachusetts Poetry in Hard Times"

The Ford Hall Forum at Suffolk University presents five poets discussing "Massachusetts Poetry in Hard Times: What the Best of Bay State Bards Offer us in Bad Times and Good" from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, in the Rabb Auditorium, Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St.

While the Dow tumbles, joblessness soars, and two wars stretch our military abroad, poets offer perspective through words, rhythm, and rhyme.

Poets David Ferry, Suji Kwock Kim, Jill McDonough, Gail Mazur, and Lloyd Schwartz will read from classic Massachusetts authors as well as contemporary artists. From lyric and verse to slam and spoken word, they address current affairs and offer a taste of the evolving ways we use language to understand and experience our world today.

The forum, to be moderated by journalist Christopher Lydon, is presented in collaboration with the Massachusetts Poetry Festival, with media sponsorship from The Boston Phoenix.

The Ford Hall Forum is the nation’s oldest free public lecture series. It promotes freedom of speech and fosters an informed and effective citizenry through events that illuminate the key issues facing our society.

The forum presents knowledgeable and thought-provoking speakers, including some of the most controversial opinion leaders of our times, in settings that facilitate frank and open debate.
