• Assessing Obama's First 100 Days

Congresswoman Barbara Lee, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, will assess President Barack Obama's first 100 days as she participates in two events during a May 2, 2009, visit to Suffolk University.

Lee (D-California) has been an activist and social worker. As a U.S. representative, she is chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee.

The 42-member Congressional Black Caucus is one of the longest standing caucuses in Congress and often is referred to as the “conscience of the Congress” for its willingness to tackle the most serious social and economic issues facing people of color in the United States.

Lee's was the lone voice in Congress to oppose the Bush administration’s call for unchecked war-making authority in September 2001.

“It is a privilege and an honor to have the distinguished Congresswoman Barbara Lee at Suffolk University to assess President Obama’s first one hundred days in office,” said Teri Fair, Suffolk University professor of Government. “The congresswoman has a long history of championing issues that promote a more representative democracy and of engaging critically in a political discourse that emphasizes accountability and justice.  I believe that her visit will inspire emerging leaders in greater Boston, particularly those from communities of color.”
