Your first year at Suffolk is all about exploration. It's a chance for you to try new things in the classroom, the studio and beyond.

That's why the Foundation Studies program - that all students complete before selecting majors in Graphic Design, IllustrationFine Arts or Interior Design - is so important. You'll learn the visual arts basics, push your creative boundaries, and come to understand who you are as an artist before choosing your path.

This mix of fundamentals and exploration certainly helped these first-year students take their work to the next level:

Emily S.

Hometown West Warwick, Rhode Island
Major Interior Design, but I might explore Fine Arts or Illustration

Why Suffolk?
The personal learning experience. Classes are small, which means I can get one-on-one critiques of my work and really get to know my professors and classmates. And who wouldn't want to live downtown in one of the best cities in the country?

Favorite project so far?
Drawing people has to be one of my favorite things. In my Foundation Drawing I class I did self-portraits and drew models which helped me get an even better understanding of the human figure.

Advice for new students?
Explore yourself with your work, and do something you never had the guts to do. College is about trying something new, so go for it!

James

Hometown Philadelphia, PA
Major Fine Arts, with a minor in Philosophy

Why Suffolk?
The first time I visited Boston – even though it was a torrential downpour – I immediately fell in love with the city and the area around Suffolk.

Favorite project so far?
A piece we created for Drawing II: it was a self-portrait, not of our faces, but through a representation of who we are. I enjoyed creating a more conceptual piece.

Favorite Boston activity?
I love to wander around and take pictures. There are a lot of neat hidden places around that are fun to discover. Being in an area with so many music venues is a great thing, too.

Advice for new students?
Be open to criticism. View a bad critique as a way to improve yourself. If you don’t know what you are doing wrong you will only keep making the same mistakes and never improve.

Emily K.

Hometown Putnam, CT
Major Graphic Design

Why Suffolk?
I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study, so the range of majors available at Suffolk seemed like the best fit for me.

What adjectives would you use to describe your first year experience?
Difficult, fun, instructive

Advice for new students?
The first year is hard and you might want to give up a few (if not many) times, but you have to just keep going. You’ll survive!
