In celebration of Earth Day's 40th anniversary, Suffolk University will host a panel discussion that explores the creation and ongoing management of the Boston Harbor Islands, using it as a case study of successful land recovery and management. The panel will highlight the groups that made the transformation possible, including environmental groups, and state and federal agencies, and elected officials such as Congressman Joe Moakley JD ’56. Moakley Foundation to Hold Scholarship Ceremony: Robert J. Haynes, president of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, received the John Joseph Moakley Charitable Foundation Public Service Award on May 20, 2010. The foundation awarded more than $110,000 in student scholarships. (press release)
The Moakley Institute co-sponsored the Connections 2 College program with S.O.U.L.S. and the Bird Street Community Center in Dorchester in July and August of 2009. This program is designed to help provide low-income and first-generation students with resources so that they may pursue higher education following high school graduation.
In March 2009 the Moakley Archive and Institute and SOULS collected box loads of schools supplies, clothing and supplies to be sent to El Salvador.
November 16, 2009 marked the 20th Anniversary of the Jesuit Massacre, which took place at the University of Central America in El Salvador.
Congressman James P. McGovern met with students to discuss current affairs and a historic moment. Some of the students were headed to El Salvador for a service-learning trip, and the others were studying the legislative process.
The Moakley Archive provided documents and information to help the Center for Justice and Accountability build a criminal case in the 1989 Jesuit massacre at the University of Central America in San Salvador.
