The History Department is happy to offer our majors the opportunity to earn course credit while working in area historical societies, museums and other history-related venues or projects. Majors may enroll in History 522, a 3-credit course, and pursue an internship in public history or archival work. Internships in history offer our qualified majors the opportunity to earn course credit while gaining experience in public history. Our History interns have worked at the U.S.S. Constitution Museum, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the African Meeting House and at MYTOWN (Multicultural Youth Tours of What’s Now), learning how museums and historical societies work, and learning about the kinds of positions that are available for history majors. The typical internship involves 10 to 12 hours of work each week over the course of the semester, regular meetings with Professor Robert Allison, and the completion of additional appropriate coursework (short papers related to the internship experience). While the students will be under the direct supervision of the institution offering internship opportunities, Professor Allison will also monitor their performance and assign a grade. Interested majors should contact Professor Allison (573-8510; ballison@acad.suffolk.edu) for more information on internships in history. |
