The Faye family, drummers from Senegal, represent the continuation and transformation of the gëwél tradition over generations. Vieux Sing Faye, the patriarch of the Faye family, is the Baj Gëwél Ndakarou, chief griot of Dakar, Senegal. Mouhamadou Moustapha Faye, son of Vieux, worked at the Daniel Serano National Theatre as a principal member of the National Ballet of Senegal. Malik Ngom, grandson of Vieux, is the lead drummer of Sing Sing Juniors; and Nogaye Ngom, granddaughter of Vieux was the featured dancer with international recording artist Youssou N’Dour. During their visits in 2007-2009, the Fayes presented the gëwél drumming tradition, taught traditional dance moves, and performed at a concert in the C. Walsh Theatre.

In Spring 2012 the Faye Family returns as part of a celebration of Senegalese culture. Members of the Faye Family, gëwéls, master musicians, and cultural ambassadors, will lead dance and drum classes in the sabar tradition and stage a thrillingly rhythmic concert. Screenings of films on sabar, photography exhibits, and festive student performances complement the Faye Family’s artistry.
