I was born and raised in Davidsonville, Maryland, a rural community just outside of Annapolis. I attended Brown University for my undergraduate studies, where I concentrated in Psychology. Upon graduating from Brown, I obtained a position as a research assistant at Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC) in Washington, D.C.
My interest in neuropsychology began after reading Oliver Sacks’ The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, during a neuroscience course at Brown. I was intrigued by Dr. Sacks’ ability to use behavioral symptoms to identify neurobiological abnormalities. My fascination with brain behavior relationships, and the opportunity to train under three board certified clinical neuropsychologists, is what brought me to Suffolk.
My research to date has focused on the relationship between executive functions and social behavior in children. My thesis, “An Examination of the Relationship Between Executive Functions and Narrative Discourse in Children Between the Ages of 8 and 11 Years,” was divided into two posters that were presented at the Annual APA Convention in Honolulu, HI in 2004. I was the recipient of the APA Division 40/Harcourt Award for Excellence in Scientific Research for her poster entitled, “Parent Ratings versus Performance-Based Measures of Executive Function.”
Currently I live just outside of Annapolis with my husband and daughter, where I am conducting research for my dissertation, “Social Perception, Reasoning, and Problem-Solving Among Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders: Associations with Weak Central Coherence and Executive Functioning,” in conjunction with the Center for Autistic Spectrum Disorders at CNMC.
My hope is to obtain a pre-doctoral internship in a hospital setting next year that will afford me an opportunity to expand my clinical experience with children and broaden the focus of my research to include a wider range of clinical disorders. I aim to continue to focus on executive functioning and emotional/behavioral regulation in children.
