The Department of Communication and Journalism (CJN) helps students master the theory, practice and art of communication.
We offer degrees in specialties tailored to match students’ academic interests and career goals. Starting with a firm foundation in Communication and Journalism – including a strong focus on effective speaking, concise writing and critical thinking – each student then chooses a concentration to gain specific knowledge and experience in their desired field.
CJN faculty members are well-regarded throughout academia and in the popular press.
Our professors make frequent appearances as experts on local television newscasts and are often cited in print articles.
CJN faculty are also very active in our field, serving on various boards of national academic organizations including the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the Broadcast Education Association, the International Communication Association, the National Forensics Association, and the National Communication Association. Suffolk CJN faculty have published 5 books, more than 35 juried articles and book chapters, and created 2 feature-length films in the past 2 years.
The department’s facilities include:
Students in media courses learn to use sophisticated digital cameras, lighting, sound equipment, and non-linear editing computers.
