I am Krystle Rivera, and I am from San Antonio, Texas. My current research is on ethnic identity and social relationships of internationally and/or cross-culturally adopted children. My other research interests include cultural factors related to the symptom presentation and treatment of eating disorders, self-harm, and substance abuse in adolescent females, and a variety of GLBT issues. My past clinical experiences include working at an alternative elementary school, a group home for abused and neglected adolescents, an inner-city middle school, and in a classroom for emotionally and behaviorally disturbed kids. When I am a psychologist I want to continue to work in inner-city schools and with underpriviledged kids in a variety of settings. I also want to do a lot of work with females with self-injurious behaviors. In my time on the diversity committee I would like to play a large role in recruiting speakers and workshop leaders with the goal of increasing the knowledge of the students on diveristy issues. I would also like to help recruit more students from diverse backgrounds to apply for the school. My biggest challenge has been moving away from a family in which everyone stays in the same city for life and in which there are very prescribed female roles. My interest in diversity comes from growing up in the inner-city and seeing how much help is really needed for people who can’t typically afford treatment.
