Mentoring Program Overview
The Suffolk University Sawyer Business School is committed to your success and the growth of your professional network. As part of that effort, the Institute for Public Service is pleased to offer the career mentor program.
Open to both full-time and part-time MPA students, the program links students with Suffolk alumni and friends who are professionals in the public service, nonprofit and healthcare administration sectors. These mentor relationships provide students with the opportunity to gain insight into career and leadership development, to further refine their career objectives and to deepen their understanding of the career path they are pursuing.
Objectives:
- For each student to be able to share his or her perspectives, ideas, strategies, and questions in a friendly and supportive professional relationship.
- For each mentor, as a practitioner, to be able to stay abreast of developments in public administration and/or healthcare administration theory through interaction with the student.
- For each student to learn from his or her mentor’s experiences, personal insights, knowledge, and know-how.
- For each mentor to offer guidance to a student in preparing for or advancing in his or her chosen field, including defining or refining career objectives and making effective career choices.
- For mentors and international students to learn...
- from each other’s cultural backgrounds,
- about their respective country’s government, nonprofit and/or healthcare systems,
- how new knowledge and skills can be used to improve the functioning of these systems.
From the program kick-off in the fall to the end of the program in the spring, mentor pairs are encouraged to meet one-on-one at least once a month to evaluate their progress towards goals set at the beginning of the program.
