Moakley Archive and Institute

Mission

The Moakley Archive and Institute supports Suffolk University’s teaching and research mission by serving as the University’s archival repository; hosting public programming and educational initiatives that promote the use of its research collections and explore topics related to civic engagement and public policy; and through oversight of the university-wide records management program. Established in 2001 to preserve, study, and celebrate Congressman John Joseph “Joe” Moakley's legacy of service and political leadership, the department’s role has expanded to include: collecting, preserving and making accessible its archival holdings which include the University's institutional records, the Congressman Moakley Papers, and other research collections related to Suffolk faculty and alumni; developing and presenting public programming and educational materials that facilitate research and promote an understanding of issues relevant to its collections; and ensuring the proper management and disposition of University records in accordance with legal requirements and University policies.
