• President Unveils Five-Year Strategic Plan

President James McCarthy unveiled a Suffolk University Strategic Plan that presents a “powerful, articulate” new mission statement in which “every word matters” and sets forth seven strategic imperatives for the next five academic years.

The plan emphasizes a “student-centered” educational experience as a key value as well as a “teacher-scholar” model for faculty. McCarthy emphasized that the word order is significant in every area of the document, particularly “teacher-scholar.”

McCarthy reported on the plan on Oct. 11 before a near-capacity crowd of students, faculty, and staff at the C. Walsh Theatre, while more than 200 additional people watched a streaming video of his presentation.

He also presented the first strategic implementation plan, which McCarthy described as a “living document” that will be updated continuously as tasks are accomplished or priorities added.

The president noted that several items on the implementation plan are at or near completion, including the joining of Health and Wellness and the Counseling Center services, the rollout of a new brand that will help integrate the campus community, and the launch of a new Web site.

He thanked and praised the Strategic Planning Committee, noting that its members agonized over every word in the document and as a result “delivered a product of exceptional quality.”

The complete Strategic Plan is posted on the Suffolk University Web site.
