• CANCELLED: The Expected and the Unexpected: Culture Wars in Brick Lane

A lecture by Bengali literature specialist Dr. Tuli Banerjee

Thursday, April 19, 2012
Poetry Center, 3rd floor of Sawyer Library
73 Tremont St, Boston

This event has been postponed until further notice. 4/19

Tuli Banerjee earned her Ph.D. from Columbia University in Comparative Literature and is the Director of Global Initiatives and a Senior Lecturer in Women’s and Gender Studies at MIT. A specialist in Bengali literature, Banerjee’s talk will critique and discuss the novel Brick Lane by Monica Ali, whom the London Observer hails as "one of the most significant British novelists of her generation.” Brick Lane is a deeply moving narrative about a woman, Nazneen, born in a small village in Bangladesh who moves to London at age eighteen to enter into an arranged marriage. Ali’s story is a stunningly written and rich novel about an outsider's quest to find her voice.

Refreshments will be provided. Sponsored by the Women’s & Gender Studies Program. Please contact mplott@suffolk.edu for additional information.
