• English Professor Publishes Poem in The New Yorker

"In the Hebrew Primer," a poem by English Professor Jennifer Barber, appears in The New Yorker's Nov. 14, 2011, issue.

Barber has been learning Hebrew, and the poem was inspired by the early chapters of the primer used in her class, which aims to teach students to read the Bible in Hebrew.

“The beginning of the book has simple sentences, and I liked the rhythm and the vocabulary,” she said.

Barber's second book of poetry, Given Away, will be published next year. Her first poetry collection, Rigging the Wind, received the 2002 Kore Press First Book Award.

Barber is the founding editor of Salamander, a literary journal published by the College of Arts and Sciences.
