Dr. Edward Rhoads, Professor Emeritus at University of Texas at Austin, will talk about the first 120 young men and boys who arrived from China in 1872 to study and live in New England for a decade before being abruptly summoned home in 1881. The returned students helped modernize China and rose to top administrative and political posts in the Qing government. Dr. Wing-kai To, Professor of History and Director of the Asian Studies Program at Bridgewater State University, will moderate the event.

This event is sponsored by the Chinese Historical Society of New England (CHSNE) in collaboration with the Rosenberg Institute at Suffolk University and the Asian Studies Program at Bridgewater State University.
