Modern Chinese History
'A survey of modern Chinese history from the sixteenth century to the present. The class focuses on two major themes. First, we will study the conflict between the modern state and traditional society. We will discuss China's turbulent transition from an old empire to the Communist regime, the dynamics behind this transition, and the price that ordinary Chinese people have paid. Second, we will study China's interactions with the outside world from the irst Opium War to China's entrance to the World Trade Organization. (Formerly HST 132) Cultural Diversity B'
