Head athletic trainer Jeff Stone was named “Athletic Trainer of the Year” by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference  for his work during the 2010-2011 seasons.

It is the second time that Stone has received this GNAC distinction, which is awarded to an athletic trainer by his or her colleagues, and he is the first multiple recipient since the honor was first awarded in 2008.

Athletics Director James Nelson commended Stone for his efforts.

“Jeff Stone has been indispensable as our athletic trainer at Suffolk University," said Nelson. "His professionalism, athletic training and networking contacts have benefited the Suffolk University student athletes in a manner that brings pride to our University and great comfort to those to whom he ministers as well as to the parents of our student athletes. Jeff's mentoring to all of the athletic trainers in the GNAC Conference is recognized and applauded by his peers, so evidenced by their selection of him as the GNAC Athletic Trainer of the Year for the second time.”

GNAC Commissioner Joe Walsh praised Stone for his work within the conference.

"This is a fitting and well deserved honor," said Walsh. "Jeff is an outstanding trainer, and year in year out he has assisted the conference in setting and maintaining the highest standards for student athlete safety.”

This is the third recognition within the past calendar year for “Stoney,” as he is known among his peers. He was inducted into the Athletic Trainers of Massachusetts (ATOM) Hall of Fame in January.

The National Athletic Trainers’ Association honored him with a 2011 Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer award in May. This award recognizes outstanding dedication and service to the athletic training profession.

Stone recently completed his six-year tenure as director of District One-New England, representing more than 2,000 athletic trainers and athletic training students . He also served as the region’s representative to the Board of Directors of the National Athletic Trainers Association from 2004-2010.

Stone has more than 35 years of sports medical experience. He is the Medical Coordinator for the Bay State Games and was named to its Hall of Fame in 2006.
