• Higher Ed Networking Event for Urban League Conferees

7/25/2011

Young professionals of color who have recently moved to Boston from other states and are working in higher education will share candid stories about their transition to this city during a panel discussion that will take place at Suffolk University during the 2011 National Urban League Conference.

The Tuesday, July 26, forum is part of a networking event for those converging in Boston to attend the National Urban League Conference this week. The networking event is a collaboration of Suffolk University, the New England Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (NE HERC), the Commonwealth Compact, the Boston Consortium, and the Colleges of the Fenway. It is designed to introduce National Urban League Conference attendees to higher education institutions in New England and to answer questions about living in the region. About 6,000 people are expected to attend this week’s National Urban League conference at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.

“This mixer is an opportunity to showcase higher education as a career option, but also to showcase Boston and New England as a welcoming place to live and work,” said Lori Cawthorne, chair of the New England Higher Education Recruitment Consortium’s Diversity Committee and an associate director of Human Resources at Suffolk University. “Panelists have all experienced the transition to living in this region, and they will address both the challenges and benefits of coming to Boston.”

Panelists also will discuss their transitions to higher education careers from jobs in other industries. Robbin Chapman, assistant associate provost for faculty equity at MIT, will moderate the discussion.

Panelists include:

  • Sabrina Williams, director of Human Resources, Tufts University
  • Daryl Ford, assistant vice provost for Communications and Infrastructure, UMass Boston
  • Juan Nunez, chief diversity officer, UMass Boston
  • Desne Crossley, senior philanthropy officer, Simmons College
  • Erika Smith, director, Transitional Year Program, Brandeis University
  • Jennifer McGowan, operations manager, Radiology Imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital

The networking event will be held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, at Suffolk University Law School, 120 Tremont St., Boston. The panel discussion will take place at 4:30 p.m.
