The Boston Preservation Alliance selected photographer Renée DeKona's image of the Modern Theatre restoration as the winner of its first Historic Preservation Photo Contest.

DeKona documented Suffolk University's restoration of the Modern Theatre stonework, which was then used to reconstruct the historic facade.

"Renee's photo captured a defining moment of the Modern Theatre restoration when the original marble signage was placed back on the restored Washington Street facade," according to the Boston Preservation Alliance newsletter.

The University's Adams Gallery featured DeKona's photographs of the Modern Theatre in two exhibits.

"Of course winning is nice, but my real satisfaction came in reviewing the whole collection of photos as a cohesive piece of work," said DeKona. "I love that as a group the photos show how many individuals contributed their time, sweat and labor to reconstruct the Modern Theatre. My only regret is that I couldn't capture every individual ... because every person on site did their job carefully and conscientiously."

The judges for the Historic Preservation contest were Anne McQueen of McQueen Philanthropic, Derek Lumpkins of Discover Roxbury, and Rita Walsh of Vanasse Hangen Brustlin.

DeKona's photo and the other submissions will be displayed in the Mayor's Office at Boston City Hall during June and July.
