The History Department awarded prizes and inducted 25 students and an instructor into the Theta Lambda chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society, during an annual recognition ceremony.

The George H. Levy Prize, which recognizes excellence, went to two students – seniors Meghan Davis and Christopher Lynch.

Lynch plans to enter the University’s graduate program in Economics, where he will continue his study of urban transportation.

Davis has been accepted into the Peace Corps. Her academic advisers – Robert Bellinger and Lester Lee – have encouraged her to pursue a PhD in history.

Senior Rosana Wan is the first recipient of the John C. Cavanagh Prize, given to a student whose passion for history is inspiring to others. As a special gift, the History Department framed a souvenir card with a piece of wood from the John Adams birthplace, an item purchased by Professor Cavanagh’s grandfather on an 1897 visit to Quincy.

Lee, a History Department instructor, acclaimed scholar and teacher, and a Cambridge political activist who was inducted into the Theta Lambda chapter, spoke about being “a footnote to history and to the lives of our students.”

Nineteen seniors and juniors were presented with the History Book Prize. The students each received an inscribed book chosen by a faculty member with whom they have worked and studied.

“This is a special event that brings the History Department closer together to honor our best students,” said department Chair and Professor Robert Allison. “The event also gives us an opportunity to reflect on our roles as teachers and to congratulate our students for their work. Their accomplishments and enthusiasm are quite impressive.”
