House Speaker to Address BHI Competitiveness Conference

Massachusetts House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo will be the keynote speaker for The Beacon Hill Institute’s 10th annual competitiveness conference at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 25, in the first floor function room of Sargent Hall.

Published since 2001, the report features an index that measures the ability of all 50 states to establish policies that sustain long-term economic and personal income growth.

"Massachusetts has consistently ranked very well on our index, which measures the underlying, long-term, strengths of a state economy,” said Suffolk Professor of Economics Jonathan Haughton, one of the principal authors of the report. “That, plus a little luck, explains why the Commonwealth has weathered the recession better than almost any other state.

“But complacency is the real enemy: we will continue to fall short of our potential if we do not address weaknesses in areas such as high costs for housing, electricity, and commuting."

The Beacon Hill Institute at Suffolk University bases its competitiveness index on a set of 43 indicators divided into eight subindexes: government and fiscal policy, security, infrastructure, human resources, technology, business incubation, openness and environmental policy.
