A Lecture by Mavis Thompson

“Life is what you make it” a career planning lecture with Mavis Thompson will take place at the Suffolk University Auditorium, Dakar Campus on June 7th at 10:30 am.

Mavis T. Thompson, President of the National Bar Association, graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia earning a bachelor of science degree in Nursing in 1979 and a juris doctor degree in 1990. Mavis is also a 1995 graduate of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Upon completion of law school she was a graduate attorney for Carr, Korein, Tillery, Kuning, Montroy, Glass and Bogard, a medical malpractice and personal injury law firm, in East St. Louis, IL. Additionally, Mavis was an Associate Public Defender in the Missouri State Public Defender’s trial office in the City of St. Louis. She engaged in sophisticated criminal defense of felonies. She is admitted to practice before the United States District Courts in Missouri and Illinois as well as the United States Court of Appeals in the 7th and 8th Circuits.

Mavis holds numerous professional and civic memberships and has served as a leader of various organizations. She is a longtime member of and President of the National Bar Association. Other memberships include the American Bar Association, the Missouri and Illinois Bar Associations, the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, and the Women Lawyers’ Association of Greater St. Louis. She is a Past President of the Mound City Bar Association, and the Citywide Community Education Council. Mavis is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the Board of Trustees at the Mt. Herald Missionary Baptist Church. She also serves on the Boards of Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, and the Human Development Corporation. Mavis is a Hearing Officer for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, a certified diversity facilitator, a youth speaker, and an election law advocate, participating in workshops throughout the United States. She spends a great deal of time mentoring law students and new attorneys, and she enjoys international travel.

Currently, Mavis is specializing in Civil and Criminal Trial practice at the Law Office of Mildred Motley and Mavis Thompson, is an Adjunct Professor of Nursing and serves as a Prosecutor for the City of Berkeley, MO. Her personal motto is: "Each One, Must Teach One!"
