Four Suffolk Athletes to be honored at Graduation Luncheon


Despite not joining their classmates and walking across the stage to receives their undergraduate degrees, Suffolk seniors Jay Baker (Orleans, MA), Matt Batchelder (Stoughton, MA), Mike Maguire (Medford, MA) and Justin Waskiewicz (Marstons Mills, MA) will be honored on Wednesday, June 15, at noontime, by Suffolk University president David J. Sargent at a special appreciation luncheon and graduation ceremony at Sargent Hall on the campus of Suffolk University.

Suffolk, the 2005 Great Northeast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament champion, was playing in the 2005 NCAA Division III New England Regional at Harwich, MA during this year's graduation ceremony.

The Rams played four games during the NCAA Regional tournament to reach the semifinals of the double elimination tournament. Suffolk lost its opening round game to Worcester State, 4-1, on Thursday, May 19, but came back to defeat Salve Regina, 8-7, the following day to reach the semifinal round. On Sunday, May 22, the Rams beat Worcester State, 3-2, in 10 innings, but then lost to Wheaton, 3-2, ending its 2005 season with a 30-12 overall record.

During the NCAA tournament, Maguire had four hits, one RBI and two stolen bases as the center fielder. At shortstop, Batchelder had three hits, including one double and scored three runs. Waskiewicz was the winning pitcher against Salve Regina with 6.1 innings pitched. Baker did not see action on the field, but did warm-up in the bullpen during the tournament.

In 2002, Suffolk baseball players also missed graduation while playing in the NCAA tournament.
