Fresh Perspectives on Local Food: An Evening Celebrating Youth Growers

FRESH, a documentary film featuring some of the country’s leading specialists on sustainable agriculture, ignites an evening of discussion about urban chicken raising, film activism, the power of youth growers.

Boston, MA —On Tuesday June 1, 2010, from 6pm-8pm, in the Function Room at Suffolk University Law School (120 Tremont St.), “FRESH Perspectives on Local Food: An Evening Celebrating Youth Growers” kicks-off a series of events celebrating Boston’s theatrical release of the documentary film FRESH. This kick-off event is focused on the most essential element of a sustainable food system: the youth who will serve as its new farmers, activists, and food-crafters. FRESH’s unique distribution campaign is uprooting the traditional model for documentaries by partnering with organizations (and in the case of Boston, one thirteen-year-old beekeeper), to show how getting involved with the message of the film can be more exciting and easier than you think.

Program Details

The evening will begin with a screening of “Planting for Peace,” a 20-minute film co-written and edited by Mike Cermak and Boston-area youth. The film takes an up-close look at local youth workers who are powering a new, urban food system. Following a short Q & A, thirteen-year-old Orren Fox will take to the stage to share how he raises urban chickens and tends to buzzing honeybees (slideshow included), as well as what his Farm Club at school thinks about Boston’s potential. Kristin Alvarez, incoming president of the Suffolk University Environmental Club, and Drew Love, intern for the Real Food Challenge, will speak about their involvement in changing on-campus food. The night will end with the trailer for FRESH and the distribution of FRESH film vouchers for upcoming screenings at the Brattle Theatre, June 18-23.
