President and CEO of Biogen Idec. Speaks at Suffolk University


Mullen, who addressed the 350 graduates of the Sawyer Business School Graduate Programs class at the morning ceremony, joined Biogen in l989 and was named chief executive officer in 2000 and chairman in 2002. Mullen and Dr. William Rastetter, Biogen Idec's chairman, spearheaded the November 2003 merger of Biogen and IDEC that created the world's third-largest biotechnology company. Mullen's many accomplishments at Biogen include: laying the manufacturing and distribution groundwork for the launch of AVONEX® (Interferon beta-1a), the world's leading therapy for multiple sclerosis; overseeing the creation of a world-class manufacturing capability, and serving as the key executive responsible for creating the largest European direct sales force in the industry. He is also a member of the board of directors of Perkinelmer, Inc., and served on the board of trustees of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In addition, he serves on the boards of directors of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) and the Biomedical Sciences Careers Program.

Students graduating from the Business School Graduate Programs class were awarded the following degrees: MBA, Global MBA, Executive MBA, Master of Health Administration, Master of Public Administration, Master of Science in Accounting, Master of Science in Taxation, and Master of Science in Finance. Graduates represented 10 states within the US and the countries of Taiwan, China, Thailand, India, Russia, Turkey, Japan, Spain, Ghana, Senegal, Uganda, Greece, Peru, Morocco, Serbia, and the Netherlands

Class greetings were given by Irene Cook , who received an MBA degree from the Business School's Executive MBA Program. Irene, Vice President of Training and Development at Panera Breads, received her degree along with her husband Jeff who also graduated from the Suffolk Executive MBA Program.

The Call to Commencement was made by Patricia Maguire Meservey, Suffolk University's provost and academic vice president. Presiding was William J. O'Neill, Jr ., dean of the Sawyer Business School, and Conferring of Degrees was made by C. Richard Torrisi, dean of Graduate Programs and associate dean of Sawyer Business School . The hooding of degree recipients was made by Associate Dean Torrisi and Shahriar Khaksari, dean of International Business Programs/associate dean, Sawyer Business School. The Alumni Induction Ceremony was called to order by Susan P. Luongo, MBA'00, President, Sawyer Business School Graduate Alumni Association Board of Directors.
