Student Entrepreneurs Launch Collegesumo.com

The College Sumo team: Wilfred Hirst, Raphael Greenberg, Michelle Ventresca, Roman Wunderlich, and Silas Dunham

Five student entrepreneurs from the Sawyer Business School have launched College Sumo, an online social network aimed at enriching college students' social lives on and off campus.

College Sumo is a one-stop information source exclusively for students. It provides real-time updates on the hottest events, parties, school happenings, and contests on college campuses, as well as the best places to see and be seen.  It also provides the latest buzz on sports, fashion, nightlife, and the dating scene in the Boston area and beyond.

College Sumo is the brainchild of alumnus Raphael Greenberg, seniors Roman Wunderlich, Michelle Ventresca, and Wilfred Hirst, and junior Silas Dunham.

“The College Sumo team has been together for two years, and without the contributions of our entrepreneurship faculty and support from the Suffolk community in general, we could not have seen the success we did,” said Ventresca.

The network has incorporated an Ambassador Program through which it recruits students from participating schools to act as liaisons and help generate new users and promote events.

“The goal is to get students in each community involved and provide them an opportunity to get real-world experience assisting in a start-up venture,” said Ventresca.

“College Sumo’s launch is a testament to the confidence that our students have in themselves and a validation that what we are building at Suffolk can help our students take control of their lives and make a difference,” said George Moker, director of Entrepreneurship Programs.

College Sumo, which already has a number of participating colleges from the Boston region, is limited to .edu e-mail accounts, and all the reviews are written by students for students.  It also offers the “Sumo Skinny," a weekly e-newsletter and scholarship opportunities.
