"The Business of Basketball"

Boston Celtics President Rich Gotham will discuss “The Business of Basketball” with Sawyer Business School students and others March 4 as part of the University’s partnership with the world champion NBA franchise.

Gotham is expected to share insights he’s gained running business operations for the Celtics.

His presentation at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in the C. Walsh Theatre, is the latest in a series of speaking engagements by Celtics executives, who are sharing their knowledge of the business and marketing of a pro basketball team with the University's undergraduate business students.

Members of the Suffolk Community also are welcome to attend.

University-team partnership

Last November, Suffolk University and the Celtics unveiled a unique partnership that involves both academic and sponsorship opportunities.

The academic partnership gives business students the opportunity to study the team's business and marketing efforts. Students then have the opportunity to develop marketing programs to be evaluated and potentially implemented by the team.

In the past year, Sawyer Business School students have toured the Celtics offices and facilities and heard from team executives about how they handle business and marketing.

Celtics speakers

The academic program also includes speaking appearances by Celtics executives; Gotham’s speech will be a highlight of that program.

Under the partnership, Suffolk University also sponsors the popular “Whoo Wants a T-shirt” giveaway during Celtics home games.

Gotham joined the Celtics in 2003, after five years with the global Internet media company TerraLycos. In June of 2006, he was named Chief Operating Officer of the Celtics, and was promoted to team president in April 2007. He is responsible for all aspects of the Celtics’ business operations and works closely with Celtics Basketball Operations and the NBA on strategic initiative and team-related matters.
