Student Enterprise Leads to Successful Film Business

What began on campus as a student enterprise has evolved into a successful independent filmmaking business, Guy Manly Movies, which specializes in music videos and short subjects.

The firm has produced and released five music videos since being established a year ago.

“It’s been a lot of work, but it’s worth it because we really enjoy it,” said Matthew Thompson, a 2008 Suffolk University graduate. “Even when we are not working, we hang out together as good friends and talk about what we do.”

Early work showcased on campus

In spring 2006, Thompson and fellow student Jeremy Glass put together a 20-minute film -- a satire on sports flicks that featured the character Guy Manly, a former ping-pong player.

The film was shown at the “Suffolk Showcase,” presented each semester by student-run television station WSUB to highlight students' creative work.

Campus connection

Thompson and Glass founded Guy Manly Movies in August 2007.  Suffolk sophomore Fabian Perez came on board a few months ago, and Dustin Devlin rounds out the team.

“We all complement each other,” said Thompson.  “We work hard, we’re professional and we have fun.”

Thompson credits Suffolk University with helping to get Guy Manly Movies off the ground.

“Suffolk provided us with the resources we needed to get started,” he said.  “And the professors, like Nina Huntemann (Communication & Journalism), were great.  She was the adviser for us at WSUB, and she was extremely supportive and willing to help us out in any way she could.”

Inititiative and ingenuity pay off

“The success of Guy Manly Movies and Suffolk graduate Matt Thompson is exactly the kind of creativity we encourage at the CJN Media Lab and WSUB Productions,” said Professor Huntemann.  “As teacher and mentor, nothing has been more satisfying and gratifying than to watch the initiative, ingenuity, and collaborative talent of Matt, Jeremy, and Fabian develop into top-notch, industry-competitive work.”

Guy Manly Movies has produced music videos all over the Northeast for bands such as Stealing Jane, Jukebox the Ghost, Lannen Fall, and Lucy Grace.
