Sweeping Changes In Corporate Tax Law

Sponsored with the Massachusetts Bar Association

Earlier this year, Governor Deval Patrick signed into law sweeping changes that are as dramatic as any since the corporate income tax was first enacted in 1920. The core of the reform package comprises adoption of combined or “unitary” reporting, and conformity to the federal rules that provide for largely-elective tax characterization of entities, both to take effect in 2009. The changes will deeply affect business entities ranging from large public companies to closely-held businesses of modest size.

Our program will draw on a faculty that includes not only leading experts in Massachusetts tax, but also general business lawyers, prominent authorities on state tax policy and its economic consequences, and a well-known commentator and observer of the national tax scene from State Tax Notes. It is aimed principally at attorneys – general business practitioners and also generalists within tax – who need to appreciate how these reforms will change the tax planning environment and the decision tree for business structuring.
