Suffolk University Offers Legislative Aides Training in Public Service & Leadership

1/26/2005

Suffolk faculty, Suffolk alumni and experts from state government will present new legislative staff with the information and resources they need to effectively carry out their responsibilities in the General Court.

Senate President Robert Travaglini , Speaker Salvatore DiMasi and Congressman Jim McGovern , who once served as Moakley's chief of staff, will be on hand (Thursday, January 27 at 9:00 a.m.) to address the trainees.

Moakley, an alumnus of Suffolk University Law School, was known as a “bread & butter” politician who cared deeply for his constituents. His staff was distinguished for its ability to resolve issues among both constituents and colleagues. As part of its effort to preserve the late congressman's legacy, the Moakley Archive and Institute promotes public service and leadership through programs such as this training program for legislative staff.

Topics to be addressed include: the importance of good public service, the public service legacy of Congressman Joe Moakley, ethics, navigating state government, the state budget process and running community meetings.

The Center for Public Management is in Suffolk University's Sawyer Business School, which offers the acclaimed Masters of Public Administration Program.
