Boston, Mass.-- Suffolk University senior Nick Martinho has been selected to participate in the 2008 New England Intercollegiate Baseball All-Star Game that will be played at Fenway Park on June 14th. Martinho earned the spot in the NEIBA classic after being named to the 2008 All-New England Division III squad in a vote of the region’s coaches.
A native of Middleton, Mass. and a graduate of Malden Catholic High School, Martinho started all 41 contests for Head Coach Cary McConnell’s Rams this season, batting a team-best .386 with 54 hits, including nine home runs and 53 RBI. An all-Great Northeast Athletic Conference selection for the third time in his career in 2008, Martinho shattered Suffolk’s career home run mark with 36 round trippers, and he also ranks in the top six in four other categories, including hits, RBI and total bases. Martinho notched a .671 slugging percentage and a .511 on-base percentage in posting 94 total bases this season, as 21 of his 54 hits went for extra bases.
“Nick’s numbers this season really speak to the performance he has enjoyed throughout his career,” McConnell says of Martinho. “I can’t think of a better way for him to close out a great career than in playing with his peers at Fenway Park, and I know he will represent Suffolk Baseball in the same way he always has over the years.”
Martinho guided Suffolk to an overall mark of 29-12 in 2008, including a perfect 14-0 Great Northeast slate that resulted in the Rams’ fifth regular season conference crown of the decade.
