Exhibit Features Works of Recent Fine Arts Graduates

Emergence features new works from eight recent graduates and former students from the New England School of Art & Design Fine Arts and Graphic Design programs.

All works featured in the show have been created as a collaboration. Emergence features the work of Ali Horeanopoulos, Jin Koh, Mish McIntyre, Jessie Schloss, Kaitlyn Sullivan, Eileen Umba, Justin Viglianti, and Daniela Wong-Chiulli

Schloss, a 2007 Graduate of the BFA program, curated Emergence, which is in the White Box gallery space through June 27, 2008.

The exhibit evolved from a critique group formed by Fine Arts alumni as a means to “support each member to enable the continued practice of studio art and provide a place of critical review and experimentation.”

“Arduous does not even begin to encompass the tremendous shift in life from student to practicing studio artist," said Schloss. "From developing resumes and portfolios to securing studio work/living space, it is not surprising that many artists compromise the production of artwork for rent and food. Most crucial is the loss of the peer art community that students have come to depend upon during their education."

The critique group's collaborative approach led to the creation of new works that explore the overall visual language of the community. The resulting work is an examination of process and content at a micro and macro level.

"Emergence is both an examination of the real-world struggle for these artists to establish their studio practice in the Boston community and an introspection of the micro community of the critique group as it grows and develops beyond the New England School of Art and Design community.”

A closing reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, June 27, in tandem with the opening of an exhibition in the main gallery of a new print folio created by the faculty.
