FINAL:  SKIDMORE 6, SUFFOLK 0

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.--  Junior Stefanie Abrams (Avon, Conn.) and sophomore Laura Attley (Chatham, N.J.) each posted victories in singles and doubles play to lift Skidmore to a 6-0 dual-match triumph over Suffolk in opening round play of the 2008 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships Friday afternoon at Mount Holyoke’s Kendall Sports Complex.

The Thoroughbreds, who improve to 12-5 overall on the season, advance to meet the second seed in the national championships and host Amherst (15-1) in second round action on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Amherst’s Wolff Center.

Skidmore, in search of its second national title in 10 years, jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage by sweeping all three doubles contests from the Rams, who finish the season at 14-1 overall in making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Championships.  Sophomore Danielle Francher (St. Louis, Mo.) and freshman Rachel Loeb (Greenwood Village, Colo.) notched an 8-4 triumph at number one doubles, while Abrams and senior Jenny Grabler (Needham, Mass.) posted an 8-2 win at the number two position.  Attley and senior Kyra Travis (Lincoln, Mass.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 victory at the number three spot, and straight-set singles triumphs at the numbers three, four and five positions by Attley, Abrams and freshman Caroline Sherman (Edina, Minn.) enabled the Thoroughbreds to advance to the second round.

Suffolk, which captured both the regular season and tournament championships in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play last fall, shattered the school record for victories in one season under fourth-year Head Coach Steve Counihan, who has guided the Rams to a 34-15 mark over that time span.

Saturday’s other second round match-up will pit Bowdoin against the winner of Friday’s other first round contest between Vassar and Bridgewater State.
