QUINCY, Mass.--  Senior Steve Durant (Malden, Mass.) threw a no-hitter and recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts to pick up his fifth victory of the season as Suffolk swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Rivier by scores of 3-0 in the opener and 2-1 in the nightcap in games played Sunday afternoon at Adams Field.

Durant faced just one batter over the minimum in tossing his gem in the first contest for the host Rams (19-6, 10-0 Great Northeast), who have won seven straight and remain unbeaten in conference play.  The righthander retired the first 15 visiting Raiders (12-10, 6-4 Great Northeast) he faced before issuing a walk to Rivier sophomore Ryan O’Connor (Medford, Mass.) on a 3-2 pitch to lead off the sixth.  O’Connor advanced to third on a steal and throwing error, and Suffolk junior rightfielder Keith Carter (Newburyport, Mass.) saved the no-hit bid with an over-the-shoulder catch of a fly ball off the bat of senior Franco Pisano (Lynnfield, Mass.) to end the threat.  The Rams, who had taken a 1-0 fourth inning lead on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Bobby Barrett (Milton, Mass.), tacked on a pair of insurance tallies in the bottom of the sixth on an error and an RBI single by senior Nick Martinho (Middleton, Mass.), and Durant retired the side in the seventh to complete his no-hitter.  Carter chipped in with three hits to go his with catch in the triumph for Suffolk, which also received a pair of hits from Barrett.  Senior Isaac Burkett (Hudson, N.H.) went the distance on the mound in the first game setback for Rivier, allowing nine hits and two earned runs while fanning six along the way.

The Raiders took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat of the nightcap on an RBI triple by junior Joe Gargan (Hudson, N.H.), but the Rams evened matters in the second on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Anthony Iacopucci (Medford, Mass.).  Suffolk notched the game-winning tally in the bottom of the fifth on a fielder’s choice groundout by sophomore Tim Corcoran (Beverly, Mass.) that plated Carter, as junior Dan D’Elia (Boston, Mass.) claimed his fourth win in six decisions this spring by scattering seven hits and fanning a pair over 5 1/3 innings of work.  Senior Greg DiMarco (Newton, Mass.) to record the last four outs and pick up his second save for the hosts, as he struck out three of the six batters he faced.  Senior Kevin Moyer (Georgetown, Mass.) rapped out a pair of hits in the nightcap setback for Rivier, as senior Phil Goulet (Framingham, Mass.) allowed six hits and struck out four in going the distance on the mound for the visitors.

Suffolk heads to Willimantic, Conn. on Monday afternoon to take on Eastern Connecticut in a non-league outing that begins at 3:00 p.m., while Rivier travels to Worcester, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon to square off with Becker in a non-league contest that begins at 3:30 p.m.
