CHARLESTOWN, Mass.--  Freshman Dannie Szabo’s (White Plains, N.Y.) two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh lifted Simmons to a 7-6 nightcap victory and a sweep of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Suffolk Sunday evening at Charlestown High School, as the host Sharks received a three-hit shutout from sophomore Sammi Letizio (Windham, N.H.) in notching a 5-0 triumph in the opener.

Szabo’s round-tripper capped a three-run rally in the seventh frame of the second contest for Simmons (22-7, 12-4 Great Northeast), as junior Kristen Souza (New Bedford, Mass.) led off the inning with a triple and scored on an RBI single by freshman Annie Thompson (Pacific Palisades, Calif.), setting up Szabo’s two-run game-winner.  The visiting Rams (10-16, 9-7 Great Northeast) rallied from a 4-2 deficit to take a 6-4 advantage with a four-run sixth inning, as a steal of home by junior Ashley Gaboriault (Sutton, Mass.) that was followed by RBI singles off the bats of sophomore Valerie Liberatore (Chelsea, Mass.) and freshman Monica Cioffi (East Boston, Mass.) gave Suffolk a one-run lead.  Sophomore Erin O’Donnell (Groton, Mass.) capped the rally with an RBI triple and a two-run Ram edge, setting up the Sharks’ seventh inning heroics.

Szabo, senior Natalie West (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomore Leah Derderian (Boylston, Mass.) each had two hits in the nightcap triumph for Simmons, as Letizio picked up the win in the second contest as well for the hosts with two innings of relief.  Liberatore, O’Donnell and junior Marie Trainor (Winthrop, Mass.) each notched a pair of hits in the nightcap for Suffolk, as junior Jess Ferreira (Cambridge, Mass.) suffered the tough luck setback in relief of senior Jenna Mourey (Rochester, N.Y.), who allowed three earned runs and fanned three in six-plus innings.

Letizio allowed three singles and struck out 10 in the opening game win for the Sharks, who took a 3-0 second inning lead and added single tallies in the third and fourth frames.  Senior Ann Talarico (Ware, Mass.) had two of Simmons’ seven hits in the first contest, as Ferreira went the distance inside the circle in the opener for the Rams, allowing three earned runs and strking out six.

Suffolk hosts Rivier in a Great Northeast twinbill on Wednesday afternoon at Puopolo Field beginning at 4:00 p.m., while Simmons heads to New Haven, Conn. on Friday afternoon to take on Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast doubleheader that begins at 3:00 p.m.
