Baseball Remains Perfect In Great Northeast Play With Sweep Of League Twinbill From Emerson

QUINCY, Mass.--  Senior Nick Martinho (Middleton, Mass.) and sophomore Bobby Barrett (Milton, Mass.) combined for eight hits and nine RBI as Suffolk swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Emerson by scores of 15-1 in the opener and 17-1 in the nightcap in games played Wednesday afternoon at Adams Field.

The host Rams (15-6, 6-0 Great Northeast) remained unbeaten in league play by rapping out 33 hits on the day, as Martinho led the way with three hits and three RBI in the opening game triumph.  Sophomores Tim Corcoran (Beverly, Mass.) and Mike Kenneally (Georgetown, Mass.) each collected their second home runs of the spring and combined to drive in five runs for Suffolk, which also received a pair of RBI off the bat of sophomore Rory Gentile (Gloucester, Mass.).  Senior Steve Durant (Malden, Mass.) allowed two hits and fanned 10 to pick up his fourth win in six decisions on the mound for the hosts, while senior Zach Wintrow (Killingly, Conn.) drove in the lone run of the opener for the visiting Lions (5-13, 1-6 Great Northeast) with a fourth inning single.

Barrett and senior Matt Shanahan (Winchester, Mass.) each belted home runs and drove in three in the nightcap triumph for the Rams, who also received two hits each off the bats of Gentile, senior Mike Carbone (East Meadow, N.Y.) and juniors Keith Carter (Newburyport, Mass.), Nick Chioffi (South Burlington, Vt.) and Anthony Iacopucci (Medford, Mass.).  Junior Dan D’Elia (Boston, Mass.) scattered six hits and struck out five to notch his third win on the mound for Suffolk, while senior Kent Anderson (Kensington, Md.) recorded a pair of hits and drove in the lone run of the second contest for Emerson.

Suffolk heads to Nashua, N.H. on Thursday afternoon to take on Daniel Webster in a Great Northeast twinbill that begins at 2:00 p.m., while Emerson heads to Wenham, Mass. on Thursday afternoon to take on Gordon in a non-league match-up that begins at 3:00 p.m.
