BOSTON, Mass.--  Freshman Lisa Schmidt (Brookfield, Ill.) doubled in the tying run and scored the winning run on an error to cap a three-run ninth inning rally that lifted Norwich to a 9-8 nightcap victory and a split of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader with Suffolk Sunday afternoon at Puopolo Field, as the host Rams posted a 4-2 eight inning triumph in the opener.

The visiting Cadets (10-6, 6-2 Great Northeast) trailed 8-3 heading into the sixth inning of the nightcap but plated three runs in the frame, including two on a single off the bat of sophomore Whitney Grennon (Franklin, Vt.) to pull to within two at 8-6, and after a sacrifice fly by freshman Seana Ellsworth (Everett, Mass.) made it a one-run game in the bottom of the seventh, Schmidt doubled home Ellsworth with the tying run and scored on a two-out error to give Norwich the split.  The host Rams (7-11, 6-4 Great Northeast) jumped out to a 5-0 first inning advantage in the second contest on a two-run triple by junior Jess Ferreira (Cambridge, Mass.) and a two-run double off the bat of freshman Gina Spadafora (Malden, Mass.), and Suffolk extended a 6-3 edge to five with a pair of runs in the fourth on a Ferreira RBI double that was followed by a run-scoring single off the bat of sophomore Valerie Liberatore (Chelsea, Mass.), setting up the Cadets’ late inning heroics.  Grennon and senior Christine Carroll (Westport, Mass.) each had three hits in the second game triumph for Norwich, as senior Emily Bean (Northfield, Vt.) picked up the win on the mound for the visitors in going the distance and fanning three.  Ferreira rapped out three hits to go with her three RBI in the nightcap setback for Suffolk, which also received two hits from junior Ashley Gaboriault (Sutton, Mass.).  Senior Jenna Mourey (Rochester, N.Y.) took the loss inside the circle in the second game for the Rams, allowing six earned runs and striking out a pair.

It was Suffolk’s late inning heroics that proved to be the difference in the opener, as the Rams plated the tying run in the seventh on a throwing error and scored twice in the top of the eighth using the international tiebreaker.  Ferreira doubled in sophomore Erin O’Donnell (Groton, Mass.) with what proved to be the winning run, and an RBI single by sophomore Angela Cole (Plainville, Mass.) provided an insurance tally.  Cole collected two of the hosts’ seven hits in the opening game victory, as Ferreira went the distance in allowing two runs and striking out four to improve to 5-5 on the season.  Senior Codi Collins (Waterbury, Vt.) rapped out three hits and drove in both runs in the third and fifth frames, respectively, in the first game setback for Norwich, which also received two hits each from Grennon and freshmen Lindsay Carey (Colchester, Vt.) and Tiana Garaboldi (Barre, Vt.).  Freshman Mackenzie Pratt (Hyde Park, Vt.) suffered the loss on the mound for the Cadets, allowing three earned runs and fanning three along the way.

Suffolk hosts Saint Joseph (Conn.) in a Great Northeast twinbill on Monday afternoon at Puopolo Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Norwich hosts Daniel Webster in a Great Northeast doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon in Northfield, Vt. beginning at 1:00 p.m.
