FINAL:  WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 12, SUFFOLK 11

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--  Sophomore Steve Kearney (Glastonbury, Conn.) went 4-for-4 and drove in six runs as Western New England held off a late charge in the final two innings to notch a 12-11 non-league college baseball victory over Suffolk Thursday afternoon at Trelease Park.

The host Golden Bears (10-5) ran their winning streak to 10 straight by jumping out to a 9-1 advantage in their first four at-bats, highlighted by three RBI each from Kearney and senior Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, Mass.).  A five-run sixth inning enabled the visiting Rams (12-6) to close back to within three at 9-6, as a two-run triple by sophomore Mike Kenneally (Georgetown, Mass.) and a pinch-hit double off the bat of freshman Nick Travelyn (Bedford, N.H.) sparked the rally.  Western New England got a run back in the bottom of the frame on Kearney’s fourth RBI of the afternoon, but Suffolk used a three-run rally in the eighth to close to within a run at 10-9 when senior Nick Martinho (Middleton, Mass.) forced in a run after being hit by a pitch and sophomore Tim Corcoran (Beverly, Mass.) added a two-run single.  Kearney capped his six-RBI performance by driving in what proved to be the winning runs in the bottom of the frame with a single, as the Rams received RBI singles by sophomore Jose Alejandro (Lowell, Mass.) and junior Keith Carter (Newburyport, Mass.) but got left the tying run on second to close out the contest.

Schwamb, junior Mike Beck (Whitesboro, N.Y.) and sophomore Joe Griglun (Southington, Conn.) added three hits each as part of a 19-hit attack in the win for Western New England, as freshman Evan Michaud (Windsor Locks, Conn.) collected his first collegiate victory on the mound for the Golden Bears, allowing five hits and a run while fanning three over five innings.  Senior Brian Shimansky (West Caldwell, N.J.) came on to record the final out to pick up his first save for Western New England, which avenged a 14-2 setback suffered to Suffolk back on March 17th in Phoenix, Ariz.

Carter, Travelyn and sophomore Bobby Barrett (Milton, Mass.) rapped out three hits each in the setback for the Rams, who also received a pair of hits off the bat of Corcoran.  Junior Reid Jackson (Burlington, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for the visitors, fanning five in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Suffolk heads to Nashua, N.H. on Saturday afternoon to take on Daniel Webster in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader that begins at Noon, while Western New England hosts Wentworth in a Commonwealth Coast Conference twinbill on Saturday afternoon at Trelease Park that also begins at Noon.
