BOSTON, Mass.-- Junior Nicole Vocaturo (Bellmore, N.Y.) pitched a complete game in the opener and went 4-for-4 with three RBI in the nightcap to lead Pine Manor to a sweep of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Suffolk by scores of 5-3 and 17-8 in contests played Wednesday afternoon at Puopolo Field.
The visiting Gators (12-4, 6-0 Great Northeast) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opener that was highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of sophomore Courtney Wallace (Steep Falls, Maine) in the third inning. An RBI single by junior Marie Trainor (Winthrop, Mass.) got the host Rams (5-9, 4-2 Great Northeast) on the board in the sixth, and a two-run double by junior Jess Ferreira (Cambridge, Mass.) closed the gap to 5-3, as Suffolk had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to convert. Vocaturo scattered 12 hits and fanned seven to pick up the win on the mound for Pine Manor, which received a pair of hits from sophomore Krissy Travers (Freeport, N.Y.) in its first game victory, while junior Ashley Gaboriault (Sutton, Mass.) rapped out three hits in the opener for the hosts, who also received two hits each from Trainor, Ferreira and sophomore Erin O’Donnell (Groton, Mass.). Ferreira allowed five hits and a pair of earned runs while striking out six in suffering the setback in the circle for Suffolk.
Pine Manor jumped out to a 7-0 advantage in its first at-bat in the nightcap, as Vocaturo highlighted the frame with a two-run triple, and the Gators extended their edge to 9-2 after two innings of play. A two-run single by Trainor that was followed by an RBI single off the bat of O’Donnell enabled the Rams to close back to 9-5, but the Gators took a 12-6 edge through five innings before plating five insurance tallies in the sixth, including a two-run double by Wallace, to complete their sweep.
Sophomore Samantha Tempe (Wanaque, N.J.) joined Vocaturo with three RBI in the nightcap triumph for Pine Manor, which also received three hits from freshman Jackie Martinez (Albuquerque, N. Mex.), who picked up the win on the mound in relief of Tempe. Senior Patty Pabon (Bronx, N.Y.) and sophomore Veronica Vozzolo (Bellmore, N.Y.) also added two hits each for the visitors, who rapped out 16 hits in the nightcap. Trainor drove in three runs on a pair of hits in the second game setback for Suffolk, which also received three hits each from O’Donnell and Ferreira as well as two hits and an RBI from junior Rebecca Schalit (Miami, Fla.). Senior Jenna Mourey (Rochester, N.Y.) took the loss on the mound for the Rams, allowing five earned runs on the day.
