Maxine Hong Kingston is an award-winning author best known for writing novels that draw on her family's experiences as Chinese immigrants to the United States. Kingston's most recent work includes The Fifth Book of Peace (2003); To Be The Poet (2002); Hawaii One Summer (1998), and Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace (editor, 2007). Kingston earned the National Book Critics Award for nonfiction with The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts (1975); and the American Book Award for nonfiction for China Men (1980). In 1997, Kingston was awarded the National Humanities Award by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Kingston is a senior lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, where she teaches creative writing.

During her stay at the College of Arts & Sciences as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar, she will be making numerous class visits and participating in "Readings from and Reflections on Stafford's Early Poems" based on the book Another World Instead: The Early Poems of William Stafford, 1937-1947, edited by Fred Marchant,  featuring Jennifer Barber, Kevin Bowen, James Carroll, John F. Deane, Earll Kingston, and Fred Marchant; she will hold a roundtable discussion; and give select readings from her work.
