EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I.--  Junior Jess Ferreira (Cambridge, Mass.) rapped out five hits, including a pair of home runs, and drove in seven runs to lead Suffolk to a sweep of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Johnson & Wales by scores of 17-1 in the opener and 16-1 in the nightcap in games played Sunday afternoon at Pierce Field.

The visiting Rams (5-7, 4-0 Great Northeast) collected 32 hits on the afternoon, as Ferreira drove in five runs with three hits, including a two-run round-tripper in the third, to help her own cause on the mound, where she allowed four hits and fanned five to improve to 3-3 on the season.  Juniors Marie Trainor (Winthrop, Mass.) and Ashley Gaboriault (Sutton, Mass.), along with freshman Jessica Kehlenbach (Bethany, Conn.), also added three hits for Suffolk, as Kehlenbach drove in a career-high three runs while Trainor and Gaboriault added two RBI each.  Junior Kirsten Griffiths (North Haven, Conn.) rapped out a pair of hits, including a solo home run, in the opening game setback for the host Wildcats (1-12, 0-6 Great Northeast).

The Rams posted a pair of five-run innings in the nightcap en route to the sweep, as a pair of two-run homers off the bats of Ferreira and Trainor, coupled with a three-run home run from junior Kellie Hurlock (East Lyme, Conn.), powered a 14-hit attack.  Ferreira, Gaboriault, Hurlock and sophomore Erin O’Donnell (Groton, Mass.) each had a pair of hits in the second game for Suffolk, which also received a two-run single off the bat of sophomore Angela Cole (Plainville, Mass.).  Senior Jenna Mourey (Rochester, N.Y.) picked up the win on the mound for the visitors in allowing three hits and an unearned run while fanning five to improve to 2-3 on the season, and she helped her own cause with a pair of hits as well.  Sophomore Ashley Mata (Wheeling, Ill.) plated the lone run of the nightcap for Johnson & Wales with a second inning single, as freshman Bianca Scholl (Germantown, Md.) took the loss on the mound for the Wildcats.

Suffolk hosts Pine Manor in a Great Northeast doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Puopolo Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Johnson & Wales heads to Framingham, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon for a non-league twinbill with Framingham State that begins at 3:30 p.m.
