CHARLESTOWN, Mass.--  Junior Jess Ferreira (Cambridge, Mass.) drove in five runs at the plate and picked up a victory on the mound as Suffolk swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader by scores of 6-2 in the opener and 11-2 in the nightcap in games played Saturday afternoon at Charlestown High School.

The host Rams (3-7, 2-0 Great Northeast) began league play by rapping out 18 hits on the day, as Suffolk overcame an early 1-0 deficit in the opener on a two-run double by senior Jenna Mourey (Rochester, N.Y.) in the second and an RBI single by sophomore Angela Cole (Plainville, Mass.) in the third, and Ferreira’s three-run homer in the fifth helped ice the first game triumph for the hosts, as she allowed five hits and a pair of unearned runs while fanning six to pick up her second win of the season.  Sophomore Erin O’Donnell (Groton, Mass.) added two hits in the opening game victory for the Rams, while junior Kerri Kwasek (Framingham, Mass.) rapped out a pair of hits and drove in a run for the visiting Mustangs (3-13, 2-4 Great Northeast), as she also struck out five in going the distance on the mound.

Suffolk jumped out to a 9-0 cushion through two innings of the nightcap, as RBI singles by Cole and junior Ashley Gaboriault (Sutton, Mass.), coupled with a two-run triple by Mourey, capped a four-run first frame for the hosts.  Ferreira plated a pair with a triple in the second inning for the Rams, who also received RBI singles off the bats of Gaboriault, O’Donnell and junior Marie Trainor (Winthrop, Mass.).  Mount Ida notched single tallies in the second on a passed ball and in the third on Kwasek’s RBI single, and the Rams ended the contest in the bottom of the fifth on Gaboriault’s two-run triple that capped a three-hit, four RBI performance in the nightcap.  Ferreira and Cole each had two hits as part of a 12-hit attack in the second game for Suffolk, as Mourey allowed five hits and one earned run to pick up her first win of the season.  Kwasek also collected two hits in the nightcap setback for the Mustangs, as senior Ashley Kowarsky (Springfield, Mass.) went the distance on the mound for the visitors in the second game.

Suffolk heads to Providence, R.I. on Sunday afternoon to take on Johnson & Wales in a Great Northeast doubleheader that begins at Noon, while Mount Ida hosts Lasell in a Great Northeast twinbill on Sunday afternoon in Newton Centre, Mass. that begins at 1:00 p.m.
