Baseball Drops 12-4 Non-League Decision At Bridgewater State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass.--  Senior Steve Smith (East Taunton, Mass.) rapped out three hits and drove in a pair of runs, while sophomore Brian Medairos (Brockton, Mass.) added two hits and three RBI to pace an 18-hit attack and lead Bridgewater State to a 12-4 non-league college baseball victory over Suffolk Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The host Bears (7-2) jumped out to a 9-0 lead over the first four innings of action, as Smith belted his fourth home run of the spring to lead off a four-run third inning and combined with Medairos to drive in four runs in the early action.  Junior Nick Chioffi (South Burlington, Vt.) got the visiting Rams (8-4) on the board with a solo homer in the top of the sixth (his first of the season), but Bridgewater State extended its edge to 11-1 in the seventh on an RBI single by sophomore Mark Claffey (Bellingham, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly by senior Jarrett Mooney (North Attleboro, Mass.).  Suffolk added three more tallies in the eighth on a throwing error and a two-run homer off the bat of senior Nick Martinho (Middleton, Mass.) (his fourth of the spring), and the Bears closed out the scoring on Medairos’ RBI single in the bottom of the frame.

Senior Kenny Downey (Braintree, Mass.) and junior Kelly LaDow (East Falmouth, Mass.) joined Smith in collecting three hits each in the win for Bridgewater State, as freshman Greg Potts (Milton, Mass.) allowed just three hits and a run over six innings while fanning five to improve to 2-0 on the season for the Bears.  Martinho collected two hits on the day for Suffolk, as junior Tim Doyle (Milton, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Rams.

Suffolk opens Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon when the Rams entertain Saint Joseph’s (Maine) in a league twinbill at Adams Field beginning at Noon, while Bridgewater State heads to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to begin MASCAC play with a league doubleheader against Worcester State that also begins at Noon.
