FINAL:  BABSON 2, SUFFOLK 1 (11 INNINGS)

BABSON PARK, Mass.--  Sophomore Brian Scanlon (Lawrenceville, N.J.) plated the game-winning run on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift Babson to a 2-1 non-league college baseball victory over Suffolk Tuesday afternoon at Govoni Field.

Scanlon’s grounder enabled senior Matt Delaney (Newton, Mass.) to score the game-winner for the host Beavers (8-4), as he reached on a one-out error and advanced to third on a single by sophomore Dave Ahern (Bedford, Mass.).  Scanlon then hit a potential double-play ball to second, forcing Ahern for the second out of the frame, but he was able to beat the relay throw that allowed Delaney to tally the winning run.

Babson grabbed a 1-0 second inning lead on an RBI single by sophomore Peter O’Toole (Salem, Mass.), but the visiting Rams (8-4) evened matters in the seventh on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Rory Gentile (Gloucester, Mass.) that plated senior pinch-hitter Matt Shanahan (Winchester, Mass.).  The Beavers had the potential winning run in scoring position in both the ninth and 10th frames, but Suffolk junior Dan Delia (Boston, Mass.) pitched out of both situations before the hosts plated the decisive run in the 11th inning.

Senior John Hudspeth (Mount Laurel, N.J.) picked up the win on the mound with 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for Babson, as junior Pete Bizinkauskas (Duxbury, Mass.) allowed eight hits and an earned run over the first 6 1/3 innings for the Beavers.  Junior Keith Carter (Newburyport, Mass.) rapped out two of Suffolk’s nine hits in the setback, as Delia suffered the loss on the mound for the Rams, allowing just two hits and the unearned run in 3 2/3 innings of work.  Senior Steve Durant (Malden, Mass.) pitched four scoreless frames of relief for the visitors, fanning five along the way, as junior Reid Jackson (Burlington, Mass.) allowed two hits and a run in three innings.

Suffolk heads to Bridgewater, Mass. on Thursday afternoon to take on Bridgewater State in a non-league match-up that begins at 3:00 p.m., while Babson hosts Plymouth State in a non-league contest on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field that begins at 3:30.
