MESA, Ariz.--  Junior Nick Carter (Newburyport, Mass.) scored the game-winning run on an error in the bottom of the seventh to cap a five-run comeback in the last two innings and give Suffolk an 11-10 nightcap victory over Southern Maine in a sweep of a non-league doubleheader as play continued at the 2008 Greater Phoenix RussMatt Invitational Friday afternoon at Gene Autry Field.  The Rams, now 7-2 on the young season, took the opener by a 7-3 final on the strength of a complete-game effort on the mound by junior Reid Jackson (Burlington, Mass.).

Suffolk jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the top of the first of the opener on a two-run double by sophomore Tim Corcoran (Beverly, Mass.) and a two-run single off the bat of sophomore Bobby Barrett (Milton, Mass.), and after the Huskies (0-3) plated single runs in their first three at-bats, the Rams added two insurance tallies in the fourth on a wild pitch and an RBI single by sophomore Jose Alejandro (Lowell, Mass.).  Jackson took care of the rest on the mound for Suffolk, fanning eight in going the distance to improve to 2-0 on the season, as Carter and Barrett each had two hits for the Rams in the first contest.  Senior Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) and freshman Jordan Berthiaume (Berlin, Conn.) each had two hits in the opening game setback for Southern Maine, as senior Adam Ross (Spruce Head, Maine) took the loss on the mound for the Huskies.

Suffolk jumped out to a 3-0 third inning lead in the nightcap on an RBI double by Carter in the second and a two-run two-bagger by senior Nick Martinho (Middleton, Mass.) in the third, but Southern Maine plated eight runs in the fourth to take an 8-3 cushion.  The Rams closed back to within two (8-6) in the bottom of the inning on a Barrett RBI single and a two-run triple by Alejandro, but the Huskies took a 10-6 edge in the fifth on a Berthiaume double.  Suffolk evened matters with four runs in the sixth on a Alejandro sacrifice fly, an RBI groundout by senior Greg DiMarco (Newton, Mass.) and back-to-back RBI doubles by Martinho and sophomore Mike Kenneally (Georgetown, Mass.), setting up Carter’s heroics in the seventh.  Martinho and Skeffington paced the Rams and Huskies, respectively, with two hits each, as senior Steve Durant (Malden, Mass.) went the distance to record his second win of the season for Suffolk, fanning two in allowing seven earned.

Suffolk wraps up play at the 2008 Greater Phoenix RussMatt Invitational on Saturday afternoon when the Rams take on Colby in a non-league outing at Snedigar Field that begins at 2:00 p.m. MST (5:00 p.m. EDT).
