FINAL:  COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY 9, SUFFOLK 4

CHANDLER, Ariz.--  Senior Rich Gawlak (Plainsboro, N.J.) rapped out a pair of hits and drove in four runs as the eighth-ranked College of New Jersey collected its 19th straight regular season victory and remained unbeaten on the young season with a 9-4 non-league triumph over Suffolk at the 2008 Greater Phoenix RussMatt Invitational Friday afternoon at Snedigar Field.

The Lions (8-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first two innings of action, but the Rams (0-1) got a run back in the top of the third in their season opener on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Nick Martinho (Middleton, Mass.).  The College of New Jersey got that run back in the third and added single tallies in the fourth, fifth and seventh frames before plating two more in the eighth for a 9-1 cushion.  Suffolk scored three times in the top of the ninth to account for the final, as sophomore Rory Gentile (Gloucester, Mass.) and senior Greg DiMarco (Newton, Mass.) drove in runs on a bases load walk and sacrifice fly, respectively, and sophomore Jose Alejandro (Lowell, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch.

Senior Dave Mebs (Cinnaminson, N.J.) rapped out three hits and drove in a pair of runs as part of a 14-hit attack for The College of New Jersey, as junior Dan Anderson (Lincroft, N.J.) picked up his second win in as many outings on the spring in allowing four hits and fanning four over six innings.  Sophomore Greg Spatz (Oakhurst, N.J.) recorded his second save with three innings of work for the Lions, allowing the three runs in the ninth while striking out three.

DiMarco and sophomore Mike Kenneally (Georgetown, Mass.) each had two hits as part of an eight-hit effort in the setback for Suffolk, as senior Steve Durant (Malden, Mass.) allowed eight hits over five innings of work on the mound for the Rams on the afternoon.

Suffolk continues play at the 2008 Greater Phoenix RussMatt Invitational on Saturday afternoon when the Rams take on Nebraska Wesleyan in a doubleheader that begins at 12:30 p.m. MST (3:30 p.m. EDT), while The College of New Jersey takes on Keene State in a doubleheader at the RussMatt Invitational on Saturday afternoon that begins at 11:00 a.m. MST (2:00 p.m. EDT).
