FINAL: SUFFOLK 4, SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE 0
BOSTON, Mass.-- Junior Kyle Cook (Chino Hills, Calif.) netted a pair of goals, while freshman Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.) made 42 saves to record his second career shutout in leading Suffolk to a 4-0 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Southern New Hampshire Monday evening at Walter Brown Arena.
First period tallies by Cook and sophomore Mike Mondello (Revere, Mass.) staked the host Rams (11-13, 9-6 ECAC Northeast) to a 2-0 advantage after 20 minutes of action, and Rose held the visiting Penmen (11-12-1, 7-8-1 ECAC Northeast) at bay in the middle stanza, as he stopped all 18 shots he faced in the frame, including 12 in the first 4:49 of the period alone. Cook’s power play marker 4:33 into the final stanza extended Suffolk’s edge to 3-0, and senior Dan Pencinger’s (Randolph, N.J.) empty-netter with five seconds remaining accounted for the final score.
Pencinger added an assist to go with his goal in the win for the Rams, who also received single helpers off the sticks of senior Tim Dancey (Anaheim, Calif.), sophomores Nick Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Brian Smusz (Daleville, Va.) and freshman Paul Weisser (Longmeadow, Mass.). Rose made sandwiched his second period effort by making 12 saves each in the first and third frames for Suffolk, as his first career blanking came with a 30-save effort in an 8-0 win at Framingham State on January 26th. Sophomore Shane Brooks (Kennebunk, Maine) made 33 stops in net for Southern New Hampshire as the Penmen outshot the Rams by a 42-37 margin, as the hosts avenged a 4-3 overtime setback suffered to the visitors back on December 29th in the consolation round of the 43rd Annual Codfish Bowl Invitational.
Suffolk closes out regular season play on Wednesday evening with a key ECAC Northeast showdown with Plymouth State at Walter Brown Arena that begins at 6:25 p.m., as the Rams enter play two points ahead of the Panthers for the eighth and final conference playoff spot, but the winner will advance to the post-season. Southern New Hampshire will await its seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference playoffs, which begin this weekend.
