FINAL: SUFFOLK 69, MOUNT IDA 52

NEWTON CENTRE, Mass.--  Junior Meghan Tracey (Rehoboth, Mass.) scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Suffolk clinched second place in the final Great Northeast Athletic Conference women’s basketball standings with a 69-52 league victory over Mount Ida in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon at the Mount Ida Athletic Center.

The visiting Rams (18-7, 11-2 Great Northeast), winners of five of their last six outings and 15 of their last 18 contests dating back to December 8th, led throughout in breaking free of a one-point affair (16-15) by scoring 26 of the final 38 points over the last 9:16 of action in the opening 20 minutes of play to grab a 42-27 advantage at the break.  The host Mustangs, who finish the season at 6-19 overall and 3-10 in Great Northeast play, closed that margin to 10 points (46-36) on a jumper by junior Elise McLear (Swansea, Mass.) with 14:45 remaining in the contest, but Suffolk iced its triumph with 10 unanswered points over a four-plus minute stretch to take its largest lead of the day (64-43) on a jumper by senior Katlyn Klecha (Fairfield, Conn.) with 5:19 to play, as Mount Ida got no closer than 14 points in the final minutes of action.

Freshman Christie Iwanicki (Newtown, Conn.) added a career-high 16 points and nine rebounds in the win for the Rams, who also received seven points each from juniors Kerry Bowman (Guilford, Conn.) and Emily Duquette (Harrisville, R.I.) as well as sophomore Stephanie Zito (Guilford, Conn.).  Senior Stephanie Morrissey (Abington, Mass.) chipped in with five points and four steals for the visitors, who also received eight rebounds from Klecha and seven boards from fellow senior Katie Castignetti (Braintree, Mass.).  Suffolk shot 45 percent from the field and held a 52-35 rebounding advantage, as the Rams scored 17 second chance points off of 13 offensive caroms and converted 23 Mount Ida turnovers into 32 points.

Sophomore Cherie Parisi (South Attleboro, Mass.) scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds and recorded three steals in the setback for the Mustangs, which also received 13 points from senior Lauren Hickey (Enosburg Falls, Vt.).  McLear chipped in with 10 points and seven boards for the hosts, who also received seven points from senior Jamie Hurd (Gloversville, N.Y.) and six points from sophomore Nicole Casimiro (Lee, N.H.).  Mount Ida shot 30 percent from the field and canned five three-pointers, including three by Hickey, on the day.

Suffolk will be seeded second in the 2008 Great Northeast Women’s Basketball Championships and will host seventh-seeded Rivier in conference quarterfinal round action on Tuesday evening at Regan Gymnasium beginning at 7:00 p.m.  The Rams posted a 65-34 regular season victory over the Raiders back on January 19th at Regan Gymnasium.
