FINAL: SUFFOLK 67, UMASS BOSTON 54

BOSTON, Mass.--  Junior Kerry Bowman (Guilford, Conn.) and sophomore Stephanie Zito (Guilford, Conn.) each scored 12 points to lead Suffolk to a 67-54 non-league college women’s basketball victory over UMass Boston Thursday evening at Regan Gymnasium.

The host Rams (15-6) opened up a six point lead midway through the opening 20 minutes of play before the visiting Beacons (7-15) used a 9-2 run over a five minute stretch to take their only lead of the contest (24-23) on a jumper by freshman Cammy Brown (Malden, Mass.).  Suffolk then took control of the contest with a 19-0 run over the final 4:37 of the half to take a 42-24 advantage at the break and maintained that double-digit lead for most of the second half, as UMass Boston closed to within seven points in the final 1:33 of play before free throws by senior Katlyn Klecha (Fairfield, Conn.) and junior Emily Duquette (Harrisville, R.I.) in the final 54 seconds iced the Ram triumph.

Senior Katie Castignetti (Braintree, Mass.) added 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists on the night for Suffolk, which has now won 12 of its last 14 contests overall since December 8th, while Klecha added nine points, five assists, four steals and four rebounds for the Rams.  Freshman Christie Iwanicki (Newtown, Conn.) chipped in with seven points for the hosts, who also received six points and six rebounds from junior Meghan Tracey (Rehoboth, Mass.) as well as six boards from senior Stephanie Morrissey (Abington, Mass.).  Suffolk shot 37 percent from the field and canned seven three-pointers, as the Rams recorded 15 steals on 24 turnovers while holding a 16-3 scoring advantage at the foul line.

Senior Ashley Greene (Brookline, Mass.) led UMass Boston in the scoring column with a game-high 13 points, while junior Leanne Meninger (Everett, Mass.) added 10 points for the Beacons, who also received nine points, eight rebounds and four assists from senior Myrna Tanger (Randolph, Mass.).  Freshman Mairi Lamson (South Royalton, Vt.) chipped in with seven points for the visitors, who shot 41 percent from the field and connected for five three-pointers.

Suffolk heads to Nashua, N.H. on Saturday afternoon to take on Daniel Webster in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference outing that begins at 1:00 p.m., while UMass Boston travels to Plymouth, N.H. to take on Plymouth State in a Little East Conference match-up that also begins at 1:00 p.m.
